Welcome to the 'Ber Months
I haven't gone "back to school" in well over a decade, and yet every September I feel it.
The sudden urge to organize the house. Buy a fresh notebook and a few new pens. Get back into a routine. Clear out the cupboards. Make lists.
There's something about September that brings a return to rhythm after the beautiful busyness of summer... a pull toward a little more structure, a little more intention, and eventually, a little more time at home.
And yet, summer isn't finished with us quite yet.
The dahlias and zinnias are at their best. The garden is overflowing. Tomatoes are finally ripe. Farm stands are full. There are still warm evenings perfect for dinner outside and weekends that feel decidedly like summer.

Come February, we'll be longing for exactly these days.
Maybe that's what makes September so special.
It's a month that asks us to hold two seasons at once.
To keep eating dinner outside while adding another layer to the bed. To preserve what's coming out of the garden while pulling out the soup pot. To leave the windows open during the day and reach for a sweater when the sun goes down.

Summer's energy begins to soften, and home starts calling us inward again.
There are jars to fill and routines to return to. Soup simmering on the stove. Earlier evenings. Cooler bedrooms. Books waiting to be read. Homes slowly being prepared for the colder months ahead.
Not quite hibernation.
Just a return to the things that ground us.

So, welcome to September.
And welcome to the ’ber months .. a season of returning home, finding our rhythm, preparing for rest, and making room for the things that nourish us.
We won't rush autumn.
For now, we'll keep the windows open, pick another armful of dahlias, eat the tomatoes while they're still warm from the garden, and let one season quietly make room for the next.
